The College Park Judo Club took a junior team of 17 judoka and a senior team of 4 judoka to the Am-Can Judo Challenge. Jose Navedo and Cory Egli took first place; Mike Neuberger (sr), Ryan Max (sr), Misha Grunberg (jr), Caleb Egli (sr) took second place; Misha Grunberg (sr), Caleb Egli (jr), William Reardon (jr) took third place; and Gabby Denu, Kansi Navedo, and Chris Grunberg took fourth place.

First tournament of the year for our traveling team. Andrew Stone, Gabbi Denu, Misha Grunberg, Jose Navedo, and Caleb Egli led the team with first place finishes. Also on the traveling team were Mike & Ricky Denu, Brian & Jen Divila, Chris & Daniel Grunberg, Kansi Navedo, Yahir Ramirez.
February 5 - Shufu Open, College Park, MD
First Team Trophy for the team in 2005. The tournament was hosted at our dojo. The team was lead by Gabbi Denu, Corri Egli, Brian Davila, Yahir Ramirez, and Caleb Egli who all placed first. Also competing on the team were Ricky & Mike Denu, Chris & Misha Grunberg, Andrew Stone, Obina Obineche, Connor Dantzler, Jennifer Davila, Jessie & Zack Voss, Colson & Constance Egli, Ryan Max, Jamal Rollins, Tirone Baldwin, Brian Beach, Carlos Rodriguez, and Maria Brogan.
February 25 – Kime-No-Kata Clinic, Baltimore, MD
Karl Tamai, Mike Grunberg, and Mayer Max attended a Kime-No-Kata Clinic given by John Anderson (7th dan) and Jimmy Takemori (8th dan).
February 28-March 2 – Japanese University Students, Washington Judo Club, DC
Kurt Tamai, Caleb Egli, Gabbi Denu, Jose Navedo, Misha Grunberg, Daniel Grunberg, and Chris Grunberg joined a multitude of judoka from around the region to work out with a delegation of Japanese university students. The Japanese team was in the US to compete in the New York Open. This was a training opportunity for both the US and the Japanese students.
March 5 – Beltsville Open, Beltsville, MD
Junior Team Champions! The Junior Team defended their title and won their second Team Trophy of the year. Constance Egli, Caleb Egli, Corri Egli, Misha Grunberg, and Ricky Denu lead the junior team to the championship. Also on the championship team were Jamal Rollins, Ricky Denu, Mike Denu, Gabbi Denu, Brian Davila, Allessa Rob, Colson Egli, Chris Grunberg, Jessica Voss, Zack Voss, Kyra Williams, Connor Dantzler, Elvis Okapala, Jude Okapala, Obina Obineche, Jack Cunningham. The senior team consisted of Leo Blackwell, Caleb Egli, Matt Mah, Misha Grunberg, Daniel Grunberg, and Kurt Tamai.
March 12 – Virginia State Championships, Charlottesville, VA
Junior Team Champions! The Junior Team defended their title and won the VA state championship for the 4th consecutive year. Jose Navedo, Kansi Navedo, Brian Davila, Corri Egli, Constance Egli, Misha Grunberg, and Andrew Stone lead the junior team to the championship.
March 24-30 – Kindai Cup, Tokyo Japan
Rob Dillow and Caleb Egli represented the USA at the 18th annual Kindai Cup. The Kindai Cup is a Junior High Team Tournament. Each team consists of 5 judoka. The team consisted of Tony Rodriguez (66kg-FL), Rob Dillow (66kg-MD), Cody Petersen (81kg-WI), Tony Sangimino (Open-CA), and Caleb Egli (Open-DC). The team was coached by Sensei Kurt Tamai. 177 teams competed. The US team finished in the top 32. (172 Japanese Teams + 5 international teams)
April 2-3 – Liberty Bell Classic, Philadelphia, PA
Kansi Navedo lead the CPJC team at the Liberty Bell bringing home the team’s only 1st place finish. Jose Navedo, Chris Grunberg, Gabbi Denu, Constance Egli, and Mike Neuberger all fought their way to top 3 finishes. Andrew Stone, Brian & Jen Davila, Wesley Dantzler, Ricky Denu, Misha, & Daniel Grunberg, Jude Okapala, Corri, & Caleb Egli, and Obina Obineche all fought hard for the traveling team. They all came home with some great mat experience. The Liberty Bell is the toughest tournament in our regional area. This year it drew nearly 900 competitors.
April 9 Citi de Flora International, Italy
Connor Dantzler represented the USA at this international tournament. Connor finished 4th place out of 12. He picked up some valuable experience fighting the European judo players and adjusting to fight the European junior judo rules.
April 22-23 – Senior Nationals, Virginia Beach, VA
A group of College Park Judo Club members donated several days off work and the weekend to help run the USA Judo Senior Nationals. Karl Tamai and Mike Grunberg donated several days to the tournament as volunteers.
May 30 – Morris Cup, Albany, NY
The College Park Judo Team was lead by Jose Navedo and Mike Neuberger. The traveling team also consisted of Gabbi Denu, Ricky Denu, Kansi Navedo, and Misha Grunberg. The team faced tough competition from Canada, New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

The Junior Team captured their third straight Virginia Open title! The junior team was led by Kansi Navedo, Jose Navedo, Gabby Denu, Rob Dillow, Kelly Binder, and Jodi Antenor who all placed 1st. The junior team also consisted of Carlos Navedo, Ricky Denu, Jack Kettl, Colson Egli, Chris Grunberg, Jack Cunningham, Misha Grunberg, Ryan Max and Calib Egli. Congratulations also go out to Kansi Navedo for winning the Outstanding Junior Competitor award and Misha Grunberg and Carlos Navedo for placing 1st in the novice division for Nage-No-Kata

The team was lead by the Grunberg Family and Thomas Hamilton Turner. Christopher, Misha, and Daniel Grunberg along with Thomas all placed first. The team also consisted of Ricky Denu, Gabby Denu, Connor Dantzler, William Hamilton-Turner, and Helena Hamilton-Turner. This tournament was suppose to have a team tournament but lack of teams caused the cancelation of that part of the event.

Liberty Bell Classic remains one of the East Coast's toughest judo tournament. This year College Park was lead by Kelly Binder and Rob Dillow who both came home as tournament champions. The team placed 9th in the overall team standings. Congratulations to the Junior and Senior teams for both placing first at the Beltsville Open. This is the first time both teams placed first at the same tournament. First place finishers for the Junior team were Andrew, Kanzi, Connor, Jose, Obina, Misha, William, and Rob. Senior team first place finishers included Jake, Mike, and Steve. Rob Dillow and Daniel Grunberg also stepped up to fight in the Senior division for the first time earning 2nd and 4th place respectively. In addition to bringing home the team titles two members of College Park were awarded Outstanding Judoka for the tournament -- Obina for the Juniors and Steve for the Seniors. Congratulations go out to both of them. As always, these team titles could not have been won without the hard work of each and every person who competed as well as students and parents that came out to support the teams. This was a good win, now lets get ready for Libery Bell!

Maryland State Champions! College Park Judo won the Maryland State Title for the second consecutive year. Congratulations to eveyrone who competed as well as thost that came out to support the team. A total team effort is what allowed the team to successfully defend its title. Congratulations also goes out to Amber Peters, Renee Reardon, Kiana Mendoza, Kelly Binder, Krissy Reardon, Ariela Tunru, Nicky Soloman, Robert Dillow, Ryan Labanz, and Peniel Powell who all all fought their way to individual state titles while helping capture the team title. Kiana Mendoza had another strong tournament finishing 2nd at this prestigious event. The tournament draws top competition from the northeastern states. Chris Grunberg and Misha Grunberg also put in excellent efforts to finish in third place. Daniel Grunberg, Shelby Labanz, Ryan Labanz, Mike Newberg also competed in the event. They all picked up valuable mat experience that will pay off in future tournaments.

Sensei Kurt, Daniel Grunberg, and Maria Brogan gave a Nage-No-Kata clinic during registration. A crowd of 100 people watched our judoka demonstrate, describe, and breakdown the Nage-No-Kata step by step. Our clinicians received good feedback from their clinic. Especially positive were the comments about making kata look fun, about kata not being just for adults, and about the high quality of the kata from Maria and Daniel.
Christopher Grunberg, Misha Grunberg, Kiana Mendoza, & Robert Dillow all fought their way to tournament championships. Daniel Grunberg, Shelby Labanz, and Maria Brogan competed and placed in the tournament. The team finished 3rd place in the team scoring.
Saturday & Sunday, August 17-18, Shufu Eastern Invitational, Beltsville, MD
We had a small team for this tournament with most of our players off on summer vacation. The judoka that did go picked up some good fights. We had two champions Mike Neuberger and Ryan Labanz. Jose Navedo and Jason Knowles came in second place. Shelby Labanz came in third and Steve Swann picked up a fourth place. Andrew Smith competed in his first judo tournament.
Friday & Saturday, July 26-27, Junior Olympics, Indianapolis, IN
College Park Judo Club made a strong showing placing 7 members in the shiai competition and 1 team in the kata competition. The team was lead by Jose Navedo and William Reardon who both brought home 2nd place finishes. Road warriors also included Renee Reardon, Krissy Reardon, Courtney Cacopardo, Ryan Labanz, Shelby Labanz, Kiana Mendoza, Cotter Rosenberg, Daniel Grunberg, Chris Grunberg, and Carl Labanz. Daniel Grunberg and Maria Brogan represented Shuju Yudanshakai in the kata competition. They performed Nage-No-Kata to a second place finish.

Kiana Mendoza and Connor Dantzler both traveled to Florida looking to pick up after the USJF Nationals. Connor came through with a gold medal and a bronze medal. Again, great effort in chasing the triple crown. "In the long run, we only hit what we aim at." Thoreau

Kiana Mendoza and Connor Dantzler both traveled to California looking for gold. Both came back without medals but picked up some great experience at one of the biggest tournaments of the year. Kudos to both for chasing the triple crown.

This was a great weekend for judo. Judoka from College Park Judo, Charlottesville Judo, Maryland Judo, Washington Judo, Hui-o-Judo, and Baltimore Judo had the opportunity to cross train with other competitors from around our Yudanshakai. Tad Nalls, Jimmy Takemori, John Anderson, Jentei Sen, Tim Redden, Kurt Tamai, and Kevin Tamai all shared their judo training techniques with the attendees. The weekend was just a two-day event that let us hit three practices and have some fun in between.

A delegation of Japanese Judo Masters gave a kata clinic in New York. The delegation included Ichiro Abe (9th Dan - Kodokan Head Kata Instructor), Michio Fukushima (8th Dan - Head Instructor Tokyo Police), Yoshiharu Enoki (7th Dan - Former All Japan Police Champion ), and Hiroyuki Hirano (6th Dan - Kodokan Kata Instructor). It was an excellent experience and a chance to meet some kata instructors from the Kodokan. Daniel Grunberg, Maria Brogan, Mike Grunberg, Karl Tamai, and Kurt Tamai attended the clinic.

Eight members of the College Park Team fought in the Beltsville Open. It was a small tournament but every match counts as we prepare for the AmCans and Junior Olympics. Shelby Labanz and Courtney Cacopardo both came home tournament champions. Christopher Grunberg, Misha Grunberg, Stefan Kegan, Christopher Turner, Daniel Grunberg, and Ryan Labanz also competed.

Saturday-Sunday, April 20-21, Liberty Bell Classic, Philadelphia, PA
Junior Team 3rd Place Finish! Great effort by the junior team in a very competitive tournament that featured over 400 judoka from around the country. It is very exciting to see our travel team continue to grow and get better. We took a team of 17 juniors and 4 seniors to the Liberty Bell Classic and came away with a 3rd place finish. Christoper Grunberg, Renee Reardon, and Krissy Reardon lead the way with first place finishes. Also on the team were Misha Grunberg, Daniel Grunberg, Cotter Rosenberg, Nicolas Rosenberg, Elizabeth Rosenberg, Kiana Mendoza, Christopher Turner, Obina Obineche, William Reardon, Ryan Labanz, Shelby Labanz, Bradley Graham, Courtney Cacopardo, and Peneil Powell. Everyone fought well in the first big tournament of the year. The seniors also produced a great day as Jason Knowles became the club's first Senior Champion. Robb Jolley, Ryan Labanz and Kurt Tamai(masters) also competed.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! Karl and Kurt Tamai won their second National Championship in the Nage-No-Kata division. They are now automatically qualified to represent the USA in the Pan American Games later this year. Congratulations to Karen Wilden & Diane Tamai who won second in the Women's Nage-No-Kata. Kurt also competed in the Masters 30-35 yr old, 66kg division. Kurt won his second Master's title.

We are very proud of our club member's performance at the Shufu Promotionals. This is an opportunity not only to demonstrate our competition skills, but also our knowledge of the basic fundamentals of judo. Our club is concerned with learning the sport of judo, which include strong roots in the basic fundamentals, competition judo, and kata. We preformed very well and the Senseis are proud of everyone.

Saturday, March 23, Virginia State Championships, Charoletteville, VA
Junior Team Champions! A team of 8 juniors and 5 seniors traveled to Charlottesville, VA for the Virginia State Championships. The juniors brought home the first team trophy of the year. It was great to see everyone working so hard. Kudos Kiana Mendoza, Shelby Labanz, Ryan Labanz, Christopher Grunberg, Daniel Grunberg, Misha Grunberg, Courtney Cacopardo, and Bradley Graham for their efforts. We produced four junior champions, Kiana Mendoza, Shelby Labanz, Ryan Labanz, and Bradley Graham. The senior team of Jason Knowles, Ryan Labanz, Bradley Graham, and Robb Jolley fought well but no one came home as tournament champion. It's no secret we all have a lot of judo to learn. It's important to keep competing. Every match is one step closer to better judo. We finished first and second in Nage-No-Kata. Karl & Kurt Tamai finished first and Maria Brogan & Daniel Grunberg finished second.

Saturday, March 2, Faye Allen Kata Tournament, GlenDale, MD
The club finished with two team champions in the Nage-No-Kata division of the Faye Allen Kata tournament. Maria Brogan & Daniel Grunberg finished first and Ryan Labanz & Courtney Cacopardo finished second in the Intermediate division of the tournament. Karl & Kurt Tamai finished first in the Advanced division.
Friday-Sunday, February 22-24, Nikolai Kozitskiy Clinic, Philadelphia, PA
Kiana Mendoza, Bradley Graham, Kurt Tamai attended the Nikolai Kozitskiy training camp. The camp featured Nikolai who was a Ukrainian and Soviet Judo coach for 30 years. It was an excellent opportunity for exposure to World Class judo training and a style of judo that we do not normally see.
Saturday, February 2, Marrisa Pedulla Clinic, Slippery Rock, PA
Andrea Alexander and Kurt Tamai traveled to Slippery Rock, PA for a clinic with Olympian Marrisa Pendulla. Marrisa is a fabulous clinician and we thank her for sharing her expertise with us. She worked closely with the entire group and was very receptive to questions. We also had a randori session with clinic guests from Slippery Rock and South Hills judo. Both are excellent clubs who we enjoy learning from.

We sent a 16 member junior team and a single competitor to the senior competition. The juniors came away with a 3rd place showing behind Starrett (Brooklyn, NY) and Huio (Beltsville). We ended up with 12 junior medals and 1 senior medal. This was the first tournament of the year for most team members and it is good to get back into competition. We need these tournaments as warm ups for the Liberty Bell, AmCans, and the Junior Olympics. Amber Peters, Daniel Grunberg, and Kiana Mendoza were our only champions this time. We will have to turn in some extra efforts to bring home more 1st place medals at the next tournament.

Kiana Mendoza earned a 1st place and a 3rd place while Andrea Alexander earned two 2nd places at the Starrett Cup. Good job to both of our girls for making the journey to New York and both fighting in multiple divisions.
